The Castle was soon reassembled in stone, & rose in worth over the forthcoming centuries. In recent times Henry the 2nd built the Round Tower and the original stone outer wall. After the English Civil War, the Castle’s prime function became that of a royal residence. The Castle has stayed almost totally unbothered ever since the beginning of the 19th century, apart from the restoration effort straight after the recent fire.
